Neck Pain Q & A

Discovery Medical Center

What causes neck pain?

Because the neck has the duty of supporting the weight of the head, it can be susceptible to injury and pain. One of the causes of neck pain can include a pinched nerve, which is when the vertebrae shift out of alignment and subsequently pushes on the nerves causing neck pain in the neck and possibly the extremities. Vertebrae can shift out of alignment from:

  • Sleeping wrong - bad sleeping habits
  • Your neck being forced beyond its normal range of motion
  • Whiplash is also one of the most common injuries to the neck
  • Poor posture (such as sitting hunched over your computer all day)
  • Your neck being stuck in an awkward position for a long period of time

Can neck pain can be prevented?

Some of the most common reasons neck pain occurs can be avoided by using a few simple techniques. Those include:

  • Maintaining good posture when your sit or stand
  • Moving your computer monitor to eye level
  • Using a firm pillow when you sleep
  • Sleeping on your side or on your back
  • Getting regular exercise to maintain proper movement in your neck

When should a chiropractor be seen for treatment?

Our chiropractor is a specialist of the muscular and skeletal systems in the neck. His treatments focus on restoring balance and maintaining alignment throughout the spine. After our chiropractor does an exam to pinpoint the source of the pain, spinal adjustments may be used, along with specific neck exercises and physiotherapy work, to restore motion to stiff joints through a specific chiropractic treatment plan. You should see a chiropractor for neck pain if:

  • Your neck pain or stiffness does not improve after a few days
  • You cannot turn your head without severe neck pain
  • You take over-the-counter medications to treat pain
  • You’re worried that your neck pain may have a serious cause
  • You feel numbness or tingling in your hands or wrists
  • Your neck pain started within a few days of a car accident
