Sciatica Q & A

Discovery Medical Center

What is sciatica?

Sciatica is caused when the sciatic nerve is compressed. It originates in the low back or butt, then travels into one or both legs. It can be caused by misaligned vertebrae, herniated or bulging discs, pregnancy and childbirth, tumors, and non-spinal disorders such as diabetes. Other symptoms associated with sciatica include burning, numbness, and tingling sensations or even an electric-like shock traveling the length of the leg. The pain caused by sciatica can vary in intensity from dull to sharp.

How is sciatica diagnosed?

As with any medical condition, a thorough exam is an essential first step towards the treatment of sciatica. Once Dr. McCough makes a proper diagnosis, he can develop the right course of treatment for your specific symptoms.
An exam usually includes a full review of your medical history, along with a physical assessment, to determine the source of the pain. This helps him find imbalances or dysfunctions in the body and detect the source of impingement, which helps him develop the most comprehensive treatment plan possible.

How does chiropractic treat sciatic symptoms?

Based on our skilled providers' diagnosis and assessment, a treatment plan will be prescribed that’s specifically designed to both offer pain relief and help the body heal itself. The type of treatment will depend on what is causing the sciatica. Treatment may include several different treatments such as:

  • Ice/Cold therapy, which is used to reduce inflammation to control sciatic pain.
  • TENS unit (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation), which is a muscle stimulating machine used to control acute pain and reduce muscle spasms
  • Adjustments, or spinal manipulation, are a safe and effective way to help realign the body to free restricted movement of the spine. They help to reduce the nerve impingement that’s responsible for causing inflammation, muscle spasm, pain, and other symptoms related to sciatica.
